Jonny’s background is pure Trials, the young Cumbrian rider from the age of 9 has competed in the British Schoolboy Trials Championship, twice winning the Title and maintaining a top 3 ranking until he was 17, he was the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Pinhard Trophy, The Pinhard Prize is awarded annually to the young motorcyclist (under 21 years) from an ACU affiliated club, who is adjudged to have made the most meritorious achievement in motorcycle sport in the preceding year (http://sunbeam-mcc.co.uk/pinhard). In 2008 and 2009 Jonny competed in European and Junior World Trials Championships but after several years in Trials he was hankering for a different challenge and bought his first MX bike, this ultimately lead him to try the sport of Enduro on the suggestion of a friend.
In 2010 Jonny would buy a secondhand KTM 250 and enter a couple of British Enduro championship rounds in the Expert class, it was quickly apparent that he had the potential but lacked the necessary experience and back up to go with his enthusiasm, his season was cut short after a bad crash at the Dyfi BEC round but he had done enough to catch the attention of many people. Jonny agreed a deal with KTM Off-Road Racing and KTM UK for 2011, since the start of the year Jonny has been racing every weekend in a mixture of MX, Enduro and Extreme events and his results each week have improved steadily due to his efforts and 100% dedication to the sport.
Already in his first full season he has enjoyed considerable success, in at the deep end with great first time performances in the World Indoor Cup, Hell’s Gate and the British Enduro Championship where he is a regular top 5 finisher with 2 overall podiums in the Championship class so far. A final 3rd overall position in the hugely competitive under 23 class of the 2011 British Sprint Enduro Championship, he is leading the ACU cross-country Championship and was part of the ACU’s junior Trophy team which finished a fine 3rd overall at this years International Six Days Enduro in Finland, in fact Jonny was the best overall performing British rider in this years 6 days and finished 4th overall in the E3 class, only being bettered by full time Factory riders! But his most outstanding performance so far of the year must be a 3rd position in his first attempt at the famous Erzberg Rodeo in Austria, not only did he conquer the Iron Giant he also showed outstanding speed in the events prologue finishing 4th overall just one position behind extreme specialist Taddy Blazusiak.
Clearly a rider with huge potential and under the guidance of KORR and KTM Jonny has ambitious plans to become a full time professional rider and challenge the Elite, already plans are in place for Jonny to compete in the 2012 British Enduro Championship, Erzberg Rodeo, Extreme and Indoor World Enduro Championship, British Sprint Championship and hopefully some WEC races. Hopefully 2012 will be a transitional year where Jonny bridges the gap between amateur and professional and can earn Factory support for 2013.
